Makassar is a road-led coastal city with a compact historic and waterfront centre, a broad northern university and airport belt, and a large southern and eastern residential expansion zone. The map’s area names are common place references rather than administrative claims. A good first shortlist usually starts with the direction of a person’s routine: Losari, Melayu and Bontoala are central; Panakkukang is the main eastern commercial reference; Tamalanrea, Daya and Sudiang serve the north; Rappocini, Gunung Sari, Tanjung Merdeka and Barombong describe different southern choices.
There is no operational urban rail network in the published comparison. Pete-pete minibuses, taxis and ride-hailing are the practical modes, so the map does not rank areas by rail distance. That omission is deliberate: planned infrastructure is not current access. Heat, rain, traffic and the last few hundred metres to a main road matter more than a tidy straight-line distance.
Makassar’s coastline is not treated as neighbourhood land. The study relation is Kota Makassar (OSM relation 11243159), clipped to the mainland urban envelope used for this guide. A coastline mask derived from 78 OSM natural=coastline ways removes 0.7 km² of offshore water; a checked 0.09 km² detached island without an inventory name is excluded from the tiled study by the city-scoped component rule. The connected port and industrial face near Ujung Tanah remains because OSM maps Newport Makassar, Industri Kapal Indonesia and Pelabuhan Rakyat Paotere there, with the road network tying it to the mainland.
Rent and expat-share values are not researched at neighbourhood level yet. The honest starting point is to compare like-for-like listings, inspect exact streets and record the costs of transport, parking, power, water and drainage. The city guides explain what to check; they do not turn a broad local name into fabricated precision.
