Where to live in Ho Chi Minh City

Start with the trade-offs that matter to your routine, then compare exact neighbourhoods on the map.

Choose the routine before the district

Ho Chi Minh City has 32 mapped areas and no single answer to where a newcomer should live. The useful distinction is usually between a first landing with familiar services, a central address with daily city life outside the door, and a newer or more self-contained routine farther from the centre. A short line on a map does not predict a practical trip once bridges, major roads, rain and the final lane are involved.

Use these groups to choose a small set of guides, then inspect the exact building and route that matter to your week. The map shows commonly known areas, not official boundaries. It can orient a decision; it cannot promise a quiet lane, a short commute or a particular building’s condition.

A softer first landing in the east and south

Thảo Điền, An Phú, Phú Mỹ Hưng and District 7 are useful first reads for international services, newer housing or a more managed daily routine. They differ in their access to the centre and in how much life happens within the neighbourhood. Compare the building entrance, school route and cross-city commute rather than assuming a familiar service network makes every address convenient.

Close to the centre, with more local texture

District 3, Đa Kao, Tân Định and Phú Nhuận are good guides for a reader who wants central access without treating the city as a hotel district. Their guides emphasise older buildings, ordinary services and local streets alongside the usual traffic and maintenance trade-offs. The exact lane matters for noise, upkeep and the practical walk to daily errands.

Central access without living in the visitor core

District 3, Bình Thạnh, District 4 and Phú Nhuận offer different near-central routines. They are worth comparing if office access matters but District 1’s visitor intensity does not appeal. Test the commute at the time you will actually use it, and include the road crossing and final walk rather than judging from straight-line distance.

Newer eastern housing and a changing riverfront

An Phú, Tân Cảng, Thủ Thiêm and Phú Hữu are starting points for a newer eastern routine. These choices need location-specific checking: construction, major-road crossings and practical access can vary far more than a district name suggests. View the route in the rain or at peak traffic if either is part of your likely routine.

Turn reading into a narrow shortlist

Open the map and use Compare areas to hold two choices side by side. It keeps only public area IDs in this browser; it does not save an address or put a shortlist into a shared URL. Figures marked as estimates remain estimates, while a missing field stays visibly unknown. The guide pages explain the caveats; the viewing tells you whether the actual address fits.
